Dear Nicole ...

TeenDiariesOnline.com is a site dedicated to everything for the teenage girl. From music, fashion, and advice, it’s no wonder that we found this site to be a girl’s true sanctuary. Within the site there is an anonymous advice column called Dear Nicole. It’s a place where you can reach out for a bit of advice or a little direction. We all know life has its little (or maybe huge) complications. That is why we here at BFF decided to team up with TD to present you with, “Dear Nicole”:

Dear Nicole,

I want to be more social. That has been my goal for a long time because I've been quiet for years in school. I'm in high school right now, and I feel as thought I'm confident in being beautiful, smart, and successful, but I can't figure out why I'm so quiet. HELP!

A. One thing I had to learn in life is that it’s perfectly okay to be me. For example, I’m pretty quiet too. I don’t go to many parties or clubs. I love to be outside doing things most girls my age don’t like to do like fishing, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, etc. For the longest time, I used to beat myself up for not wanting to rush to the next Jay Z concert but guess what ~ that is who I am. Those are my interests and that is OKAY. I say that to emphasize to you that it’s OKAY to be quiet. It sounds like you know that you are Beautiful, Smart and Successful and that’s all that matters. Some of the most profound and interesting people don’t speak a lot. But when they do speak, its something poetic and amazing. Maybe that’s you. If you are still interested in getting out there a bit more, join a few social clubs at school and start there. That is a good way to speak up a bit more and meet some pretty interesting people. Hope this helps!

Music Monday

Get ready because the Mechanical Kids came to party!! Get to know this new group as they introduce themselves to you:

How we came together:

Mechanical Kids was started in 2006 as an acoustic side project by vocalist Seann Bowe, formerly known as A West Way Home. Through out the next 3 years of playing with other bands, he decided to make something more out of A West Way Home. Gathering good friends Dj Alvarez and Brad Brown from former band Rescue, they started to progress the project with the single "For My Own Good". Over the course of a few months, Tom Carrillo joined the band along with Mike Severson from former band With Hours Waiting. Shortly after the name change and a couple more recordings, Steve Pitzl from Saved By Stereo tagged along.

It's quite clear that these boys have something definitely going for them. After being claimed by AP Magazine as a Hometown Hero, they are getting ready to tour along with playing as many shows as possible.

Expect to hear more from Mechanical Kids, for this is just the beginning.

Influences:

Fall Out Boy, Owl City, Black Eyed Peas.

Inspiration:

ghost hunting, Ding-Dong-Ditch, dancing, acting like kids

For more info. on the Mechanical Kids visit :

We hope you and your BFF are prepared to be boppin' your head to the music of the Mechanical Kids.

Celebrities are constantly in the limelight and it's obvious that they need that one person they can lean on, which brings us to this week's favorite pair of Celeb BFFS:

Tia & Tamera Mowry

What's better than having your sister as a BFF? Having an identical sister as your BFF! Sharing space in the womb will definitely put any pair of individuals in synch! These two gals were born in Germany and were later moved to California where they pursued acting. They got their big break as they played Tia & Tamera Landry, from the hit show 'Sister, Sister'. After the show ended, the girls went on and furthered their education at Pepperdine University and then continued to pursue acting, recently being seen in 'Hot Chicks' and Tia has a major role in the show 'The Game'. We all know life has its little (or maybe huge) complications. That is why we here at BFF decided to team up with TD to present you with, “Dear Nicole”:

Dear Nicole,

My stepfather thinks I'm too young to be on Facebook, Myspace, etc. because I'm only 14 about to be 15!!! I'm a 9th grader and I REALLY don't understand why I can't. My mom says it's cool with her and she doesn't mind, but he's stopping me from my social life. I'm extremely popular because of my fashion & personality, and he is totally ruining my LIFE! Why is that Nicole?

A: Sometimes parents, especially fathers, can be a bit overprotective when it comes to the budding social lives of their children. Rightfully so sometimes, after all there are a lot of pedophiles on the internet these days. If you don’t understand his viewpoint, it’s likely that he doesn’t get yours either. I suggest you start there. Take some time to talk to your dad about your interests and be willing to listen to his concerns. See if you can come up with a compromise. Hope this helps!

Music Monday

An electronica project started by Adam Young, Owl City has taken the charts with his latest hit "Fireflies". Owl City was started by Young, who grew up in Owatonna, Minnesota, where he produced his music in the basement of his parents' home. Inside this "cave," as Adam likes to describe it, he has begun to quickly win over a large audience thirsty for something genuine, something sublime. Growing up in a "sheltered bubble" and being one of the more shy kids around the neighborhood, Adam seemed compelled to lend his time and creative ideas to music. "I've always been the shy guy, I don't see that changing, but I definitely feel a lot more comfortable than I anticipated. I can hide behind the music." says Young to PureVolume.com.

While his parents were away, Adam decided to take it to the next level and post up what soon became titled his first self-titled cd. For a month he decided not to mention it to anyone but soon word of mouth began to spread with demands coming along from different parts of the country.

As the fans increase, Owl City is focused on writing new songs. For more info on Owl City, visit the official website @ : OwlCityMusic.com.

Fashion Update!

In May 2004, long time BFF's, Christina Kornilakis and Sarah Gregory took their love for vintage clothing and created the label Sweet Tater. Tunics and shirt dresses comprised of crisp cottons, soft wools, silks, and rich velvets are what made this label a craze among many, including Hollywood starlets themselves, such as Kirsten Dunst, Liv Tyler, and Sofia Coppola. Attention to detail is a must as each piece is adorned with pleats, pintucks, bibs, and bows.

According to their website, May 2006 "... brought 'the dress', a Grecian inspired cotton shirtdress that literally stopped girls in their frenetic NY pace and drew them into the store in droves". Since then, the dress has been re-created every season with variations on style, color, or fabric. 'The dress' was such a smash that in Fall 2006, they created their first exclusive design collection for Intermix stores.

For more info. on Sweet Tater or to browse through their current collection, hop on over to: SweetTater.net.

Weekend Guide

Looking for something to do this weekend with the BFF? Well don't worry, we've got you covered. Every Thursday, we'll be supplying you with an overload of ideas on what you, the BFF, and anyone else can do to ensure that your weekend isn't a total dud.

Seeing as New Moon is coming out, my friends and I got on the topic about all the books we read and even all the book hype we joined in on, including Twilight. It got me thinking ... why not start a book club? Don't yawn! With a book club, you can choose any type of books that you and your friends love to read, whether it be mystery, drama, etc. Following an article from Teenreads.com, here are some nifty tips on how to get your book club started:

  • contact all of your pals - the easiest way to get a book club started is by contacting all of your friends or fam (such as cousins) who enjoy reading. You can also post up handmade posters on your school's or library's local bulletin board.
  • make sure the people who contact are really dedicated to reading and that your group consists of 8 - 12 members. You don't want a group too big because discussion will be hard but you also want a good amount so if some members don't show up, you'll still have a good sized group.
  • Remember: You're hear to share your thoughts and opinions on the book. NOT TO GOSSIP! (you can save that for after the meeting)
  • Once you've got your club going, you might want to set some ground rules to keep things running smoothly. It might be a good idea to appoint a secretary who keeps track of your book lists (both what you've read and what you plan to read) and sends out reminders about your meetings.
It might sound like hard work, but your book club will be a lot of fun once set and it's something you can take part in all year around, rain or shine.

Celebrity Wednesday!

Here on BFF we celebrate everything that ties Best Friends, and what couldn't be better than showcasing every week, our favorite celeb BFFs! Celebrities are constantly in the limelight and it's obvious that they need that one person they can lean on, which brings us to this week's favorite pair of Celeb BFFS:

Zach Braff & Donald Faison

These two best buds first met while reading lines on the set of the hilarious t.v. hit show, Scrubs. They meshed immediately and became so tight that after working only one year together on the show, they became roomies while living in New York. Zach makes it a point to note that their ethnic backgrounds in no way defers their friendship. "He's black and I'm white, and not only is it not an issue, but, well, on the rare occasion it is an issue, we just talk about it and joke about it. Neither one of us is uptight about the East Coast Jewish stereotypes or the black stereotypes. We are from totally different backgrounds and have the same sense of humor." says Braff as he tells Hillel.org. Faison goes to say that they are so much like their characters that they might as well be the real life J.D. and Turk.

Q. Dear Nicole,
I'm sad. I just broke up with my boyfriend and now I am in love with his cousin. What should I do? I really like the guy. I need advice!

A: Are you serious? DO NOT DATE YOUR EX-BOYFRIEND’S COUSIN. It will not work out for you at all. It is likely that your ex will not find that too appealing, nor will his family. Even if a rift is caused between your ex and his cousin because of your love tryst, it is likely that you will receive the short end of the stick. After all, blood is thicker than water, so your ex will probably forgive his cousin LONG before he forgives you. Just leave it alone and find someone else. Hope this helps!

Music Monday - Get to Know Wynter Gordon

Not your everyday girl on the scene, Wynter Gordon is a daunting new talent. Ms. Wynter Gordon's music is a moving combination of pleasure and pain, failure and triumph. In a word - life. Her debut album is a composition of dance floor hits that'll make sure to keep you moving to the beat. "I grew up in South Jamaica Queens, in a two-room house with my mother and six brothers and sisters," Wynter describes. Her childhood was difficult, shaped by poverty and an abusive and largely absent father. "My only escape was art," says the singer via her official MySpace page. Many of the songs on her debut album will reflect these feelings and other struggles that she had to deal with while growing up."Music is my passion and my life, but it is also a door to do something else. It is an opportunity to raise awareness and actually help people, and that's where I want to go."

Be sure to check out Wynter's MySpace page for all of her latest music. We promise you and your BFF won't be able to sit still.

Doing Good w. DoSomething.org!

Carrie Underwood is on her way to becoming a CGG (Celebs Gone Good) superstar - we've already covered her work for music education and animal welfare, and now she's raising awareness about breast cancer. The American Idol champ paid a visit to the legendary Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville to flip a giant switch that turned the concert hall’s famous barn backdrop pink, to symbolize the fight against breast cancer. The event was in support of the breast cancer charities Women Rock for the Cure and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Carrie was then joined onstage by other country music artists for a concert.

Says Carrie: “We’re here to help those who have been diagnosed, and we’re here to raise awareness, and hopefully find a cure.”

Breast cancer is usually seen as a disease of older women, but young women are susceptible as well, and their cancer may more aggressive and less likely to respond to treatment than with older women. More than 250,000 American women battling the disease were diagnosed at the age of 40 or younger, and it’s the leading cause of cancer death in women ages 15 to 54. So join Carrie in the fight against breast cancer – get inspired by reading one young woman’s story of breast cancer, and thenorganize a benefit concert with the proceeds going to your favorite breast cancer charity.
