How to Live with Your Best Friend

Hey BFFs,

The following post comes from a blog titled My DISFunkshion. The story suggests some ways on how to make living with your best friend great for the both of you. Make sure to drop a line below and tell us what you think.

How to Live with Your Best Friend
by Traci Lee

“Playing house” on the playground in second grade is one thing, but living with your friends is another.
Some people will warn you against rooming with your best friends in college but others say it’s no big deal.
In my experience, there are important do’s and don’ts:

The key to successfully living with friends is to make sure you’re not spending twenty-four hours a day with each other.

If you spend all day together, what will you have to talk about when you come home?

It’s good to keep company with different people so you are not all sharing the same friends.
Having friends in common is nice, but if you share all of the same friends, that’s just a recipe for unnecessary drama.

Good communication is also important, not just for living situations but in all relationships.
When you’re living with someone, it’s much easier to find their annoying habits more aggravating than you normally would on a day-to-day basis, but try not to bottle it up or engage in passive aggressive behavior.

Talk openly without sounding like you’re accusing one another, and make sure you don’t take criticisms as a personal attack.

Living with your friends is a lot more work than it seems, but when the situation is handled right, it can be the best experience.

Dear Nicole

TeenDiariesOnline.com is a site dedicated to everything for the teenage girl. From music, fashion, and advice, it’s no wonder that we found this site to be a girl’s true sanctuary. Within the site there is an anonymous advice column called Dear Nicole. It’s a place where you can reach out for a bit of advice or a little direction. We all know life has its little (or maybe huge) complications. That is why we here at BFF decided to team up with TD to present you with, “Dear Nicole”:

Dear Nicole,
Need some advice on asking my 'rents to go on a date with my BF. I'm scared. Every time I go to ask and we end up NOT getting together, he gets really disappointed. I don't want to loose him, so can you please give me some advice on how to handle this. Thanks :)

A: I suggest you start by setting the mood. Talk to your parents when they’re chilling out and in a good mood. Let them know that you really want to talk to them about something very important to you. Use ‘I’ statements like, “I believe I have shown you that you can trust, so I wanted to talk to you about maybe going out on a date”. Be prepared with examples of how you’ve earned their trust. Be willing to compromise and suggest a group date and definitely make sure you reassure your parents by suggesting a meeting between them and your bf first. If your parents seem very resistant, back off for a minute. Now as far as your boyfriend is concerned…I hope he can be a bit more understanding. The last thing you need to add to this equation is stress over losing him.  Hope this helps! – Nicole

Music Monday

For today's Music Monday, many of us here at BFF have fallen in love with Mr. Hudson's "There Will Be Tears". You might be familiar with Mr. Hudson as he has collaborated with Jay-Z (on his "Young Forever" track via the Blueprint 3) and Kanye West - he is currently signed to Kanye West's label G.O.O.D. Music. So sit back and enjoy the smooth sounds of Mr. Hudson. We promise, if the song doesn't hook you, the video will.

Do you love "There Will be Tears" or not? Let us know and drop a line below!

Dear Nicole,
When people talk about me, it really gets to me even though I shouldn't care. But I'm in high school now and it's different. People are making fun of what I wear and it's bothering me. What should I do when people talk about me?

A: Bullying and peer harassment are common and very hurtful in high school. Believe it or not 5 out of 27 kids in most schools are being harassed by other students in some way shape or form. So you are not alone. There are a few things you can do. You can talk to a staff member if you feel like the harassment is excessive and needs to be addressed by an adult. You can build a strong support blanket of friends and students that are close to you and surround yourself with those students daily. You can start a bullying or peer harassment support group (during lunch or after school) for others experiencing the same thing or start a campaign in your school with the help of a teacher, students and administration. Lastly, you could confront those who are coming against you in a classy way. That may be you simply laughing them off, ignoring them or telling them to basically “get a life”. Notice, I didn’t tell you to change who YOU are. You have to be strong and confident in who you are as a person or no one else will. Hope this helps!
