In the past year and a half, Matthew Inman's cartoon take on absurd life moments, also known as The Oatmeal, has catapulted from relative unknown to Internet comic staple. The Oatmeal is a collection of comics and quizzes that poke fun at the silly, life truths that we all know and ignore. His wry, often spastic comics are a fun way to procrastinate online. Here are a few of my favorites...

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

My earliest memories of Valentine's Day are from elementary school, where everyone in class was required to give out those cheesy Disney cards to each person. (I always chose one of the Disney princesses!). We'd spend an hour of class walking to and from desks, industriously leaving Valentine's Day cards at each. Some even got candy taped to their cards, a universal "You're cool" or "I like you". But now that we are a bit older, Valentine's Day doesn't seem as simple as those days. Choosing the right gift can feel impossible. Do I go with the romantic, cuddly approach or something a little more useful? To get you started, here are some of my favorite Valentine's Day ideas:

The 68th annual Golden Globes was earlier this week, and like any other award show, it's really more about who was wearing what than the actual awards! This year featured a variety of gorgeous, rich colors, from emerald to a palette of pinks. There were some who dazzled while others were just a turn off. WIN: Amy Adams
Adams is totally gorgeous in this blue Marchesa gown. The intricate detailing on the bodice is to die for!

FAIL: Diane Kruger
80s flashback, anyone? A usually chic beauty icon, Kruger baffles us in this bright fuchsia ruffle dress by Christian Lacroix. With enormous neckline pleats and a huge bowtie at the waist, this is a bright pink, retro NO

WIN: Catherine Zeta-Jones
Akin to her signature regal glamorous style, Zeta-Jones is absolutely gorgeous in emerald, which complements her brunette tresses perfectly. This strapless Monique Lhuillier gown is a definite hit!

FAIL: Michelle Williams
This evening version of a sundress by Valentino is not working for me! The see-through fabric, strange flowers, and bland color, not to mention how frumpy it drapes on Williams, are disastrous. Very unfortunate for the Blue Valentine star

The Glee star literally sparkled in this one-shouldered belted dress. Love the curve-hugging transition to a beautiful train at the end!

Rainbow splotches and mismatching shoes... what's going on! While Carter was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in The King's Speech, this clashing Vivienne Westwood get-up is winning her a spot on "Worst Dressed" lists!

Camilla Supports the Troops!

Denim is a definite must have of the new Spring/Summer 2011 season as denim is not only comfortable but also exudes style. So take a peek at what you should be looking for when it comes to denim for the new season!

The last season was all about skinny and boyfriend jeans but this new season brings a little bit more variety when it comes to denim. Go for artful denim which features different embroidery or colors to add some spice to the denim. Acid washes are also in and look amazing, especially if paired with different color fashion items.

Mix and match different styles and go for an all denim outfit for a bold look, or go subtle but choosing to mix and match different fabrics with your denim! Pay attention to details and you will most definitely end-up looking “smashing” in your new hot denim outfit. Enjoy!

Get to Know: Lucy Hale

With the popularity of the hit ABC Family show, "Pretty Little Liars" on the rise, you will be seeing actress Lucy Hale's face everywhere. Hale first appeared on the reality show American Juniors in 2003. She was part of the vocal quintet formed with the top 5 finishers. This was followed by guest roles on shows such as Drake & Josh, Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, The O.C., and How I Met Your Mother. She appeared in two episodes of the Disney show Wizards of Waverly Place.

According to Teen Vogue: "Lucy Hale positively swears she's not a typical Hollywood actress. 'I've only been living here for a few years. I never thought about acting when I lived in Memphis—actually, pretty much the opposite. I wanted to be a singer,' Lucy reveals. 'Someone randomly suggested I audition for a few things. I thought, Why not? And I got a role on [Nickelodeon's] Drake & Josh. It was literally just a sentence, but I was so excited to be an actress.'"

Apart from playing her role as A on Pretty Little Liars, some of her favorite hobbies includes listening to music. Lucy loves Lady Antebellum, and one of her favorite singers is Taylor Swift. How to Keep in Tip-Top Shape

When we think of exercise or keeping fit, we tend to see it as a tremendous task. Keeping healthy is so important to the well-being of ourselves, especially as we get older. So to make this "task" turn into some fun, we've gathered a few fun ways that you are your BFF can stay healthy and fit.

1. Belt it out Baby
You don’t have to be a superstar to enjoy the benefits of singing. Singing increases oxygen flow, which does wonders for your skin and immune system, as well as your brain! You can sing in the shower in the morning or along with your ipod.

2. Write in a blog
Writing down thoughts and feelings about things in your life, can have amazing affects on your immune system. It sounds crazy, but through honest blogging, you are able to more effectively solve problems in daily life. With less worry, you have less stress, which results in a stronger immune system. While blogging, you can write anything you want. And don't worry about privacy, many blogging sites such as Blogspot, offer settings in which you can either keep your posts public, private, or allow only a number of certain people to read.

3. Laugh
No one will disagree that everything gets better when you’re able to just forget your problems and LAUGH. If this seems easier said than done, then bring the laughter to you. Watch funny movies or spend more time with the friends that make you laugh. Let’s face it, laughter just makes you feel good.

4. Eat more often
There is so much pressure out there to watch what you eat. Skipping meals isn’t just ineffective for losing weight, it can be dangerous. Even if you shed a few pounds by eating less, your body goes into starvation mode, which in turn slows down your metabolism, which isn’t exactly an easy thing to bounce back from. Food should be thought of as fuel for your day. Before you go out, just grab a handful of something. Eating five small meals a day can keep your energy up and help you accomplish more in a day than you thought possible.

Some Quick and Healthy Snack: Fudge Pops, Tropicana Fruit Juice Bars, apples (plain or with reduced fat peanut butter), Oranges, Frozen bananas or strawberries, Baby Carrots (plain or with low fat ranch dip).

5. Kick it with your friends
By surrounding yourself with people that share your interests, latest crush, and deepest darkest secrets, you may be pleased to know that you are also significantly reducing stress and increasing endorphins. Not only is that essential in health, but for personal happiness as well.

6. Shake that booty!
Now when I say dance, I’m talking, “let it all hang out”, Napoleon Dynamite style! By turning on some music and finding your beat (understandably not the same for everyone), you’re not only forgetting all about the embarrassing things you did today, you’re going all out and embracing all your flaws while still getting a great cardio workout.

7. Do something you love
When you participate in the things you love, you are re-energizing not only your body, but also your creative aptitude. You alert your senses and decrease your stress and worry, which helps you maintain a healthy outlook on life. This can be anything you like, such as scrap-booking, painting, reading, and any hands on activity that you enjoy that engages your imagination.

January marks the beginning of many new shows and many new seasons of our favorite shows. There's so many that it is definitely hard to keep track! But don't worry, we've got ya covered. Here are some of our picks for some tune-in worthy premieres. Be sure to tell us what you think by dropping a line below!

Pretty Little Liars - This super-addicting show premiers tonight on ABC Family at 7:58PM EST. In case you haven't heard of it, here's the basic synopsis: One year ago, Alison, the Queen Bee of their group, disappeared and the girls swore they'd never tell what really happened that night. They thought their secrets would bond them together, but just the opposite is true. Then again, who's to say what the truth is in Rosewood. It seems everyone in town is lying about something.

Greek - Greek, an original series by creator Patrick Sean Smith, is a dramedy set at fictitious Cyprus-Rhodes University, which focuses on the social minefield that is the Greek system. Catch it on ABC Family, right after Pretty Little Liars, at 9PM EST.

Degrassi - We agree, this show definitely goes there. After Degrassi hit the boiling point this summer, a strict new discipline code hovers over all -- but draconian rules and dress codes won't stop the drama. At a high school turned upside-down, you can expect the unexpected... from everyone. Be sure to check it out on Teen Nick.

The tradition of setting New Year's resolutions was started by the Babylonians. For them, the top resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment!

The new year didn't always begin on January 1, which had been established as the first day of the year by Julius Caesar. The new year celebration was originally observed at the beginning of spring by the Babylonians 4,000 years ago.

The most popular New Year's resolution in the United States today is to lose weight.

In Holland, people eat donuts on New Year's Day because the round shape symbolizes a full circle of life from one year to the next.

The first New Year's Eve ball in New York was 700 pounds, 5 feet in diameter, and made of wood and iron! The modern ball dropped is made from Waterford Crystal and weighs over 1,000 pounds!

Since its debut descent in 1907, the ball has dropped every year, except 2: in 1942 and 1943 because of wartime restrictions in New York City.

You may recognize this Yale acappella group from NBC's The Sing-Off. Well, we here at BFF are so excited to have gotten to know this group of amazingly talented singers and to share their support for the BFF bracelet initiative. We've invited Brennan from the Whiffenpoofs to do a guest blog feature today. Check it out:

The Whiffenpoofs are among Yale University's oldest traditions. Founded in 1909 by a group of Glee Club singers, the "Whiffs" have sung together ever since, counting among their ranks such artists as Cole Porter. The Whiffenpoofs are a unique institution: not only are they the oldest collegiate acappella group in the country, but the group is composed of all seniors, so the members change every single year.

The Whiffenpoofs of 2011, this year's group, took advantage of the remarkable opportunity to appear on NBC's hit reality show, The Sing-Off. Filmed over the summer, the show launched us headfirst into our year as Whiffs, acting as what member Brennan Caldwell refers to as "acappella boot camp": "We filmed the show before we really knew each other. The weeks we spent in LA gave us a chance to learn about each other, musically and socially. It was key."

Now, almost halfway through our tenure as Whiffenpoofs, we can say without a doubt that we've formed lifelong friendships. Whether singing for elementary schools, or at the Lincoln Center for a pediatric AIDS benefit, or simply hanging out on campus, the Whiffs of 2011 are as much a group of brothers as a bunch of a cappella singers.

The Whiffs are proud to support the BFF Bracelet Program and wish our troops overseas comfort and joy this holiday season. We hope you enjoy this clip of "Silent Night"!

How to Help a Friend in An Abusive Relationship

According to College Candy, at least 32% of females have experienced an abusive relationship. Often times, people are scared to report their partner or tell their friends. Abusive relationships are difficult to deal with; you want to be there for your friend, but one tiny mistake could jeopardize your friendship and leave your friend in a dangerous situation that could potentially get worse.

Celebs, Google, and Sesame Street in the Holiday Spirit for Blue Star Families!

The holiday season can admittedly be a pretty cheesy time of year - there are twenty different Santa Clauses strategically placed around town, some red and green reindeer sweater that you are required to wear, and the dreaded fruit basket that somebody always sends! But the great thing about this time of the year is not the decorations or the presents (well, the presents help A LOT!), but rather it's the kindhearted, cheerful spirit that seems to take over. I start to notice all the wonderful things that people do to help each other out, and that's something you can't buy on Black Friday!

So BFF is dedicating today's post to a wonderful organization, Blue Star Families. Started by military families for military families, BSF strives to build a network of support and empowerment. With 70 chapters across the country, their programs like Operation Appreciation and Books on Bases, Smiles on Faces are helping to improve the lives of those affected by war.

Check out some recent initiatives with Blue Star Families:

"Gulliver's Travels" co-stars Jack Black and Jason Segal have teamed up to record this remake of the 1977 holiday mash-up of "Peace on Earth" and "Little Drummer Boy" by David Bowie and Bing Crosby. Proceeds from sales will go to Blue Star Families.

Sesame Street partners with Google to help families stay connected. Google is offering complimentary $10 call cards to families of members of the U.S. armed forces who are registered with Blue Star Families or Sesame Street Family Connections (their social network for military families) and sign up between now and December 22.

Supporting military families has even become a top Presidential directive led by Michelle Obama!

It's unfortunate that not everyone can be home for the holidays. But we can all try to help out by showing our unconditional support! A little bit goes a long way. And don't forget BFF's initiative to connect people with friends in the armed forces, our BFF bracelet!

VH1's Salute the Troops will be featuring blowout performances by some of the top divas of the music industry. Let's take a look at some of our favorites...

Nicki Minaj
Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, this spunky 25-year-old rap diva burst onto the hip-hop scene with "Massive Attack" and "Your Love" earlier this year. Often see with brightly-colored tresses, this is one star that does not want to be defined: "The point is, everyone is not black and white. There are so many shades in the middle, and you’ve got to let people feel comfortable with saying what they want to say when they want to say it," Minaj tells OUT Magazine in a recent interview. With feminist pride, and alter-egos (like Roman Zolanski), Nicki Minaj is will definitely be making huge waves in the music and pop culture. Check out her new album, Pink Friday, which debuted at #2 this past November!

Katy Perry
Califorinia Gurl Katy Perry has dominated the music scene with hits, like "Teenage Dream" and "Fireworks." But she's probably best known for consistently making headlines, with back-to-back performances at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and the Grammy Nominations Concert Live and her recent controversial wedding to Russell Brand in India. But we all love Perry because this is one diva that knows how to have fun! (Did you catch her short-lived guest star on Sesame Street that was deemed too racy for the children's classic?) Did you know that today is World AIDS Day? World AIDS Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of the HIV infection. An organization called (RED) is a simple idea that transforms our incredible collective power as consumers into a financial force to help others in need. The organization teams up with iconic brands such as Converse, Apple, Dell, Starbucks, Nike, and GAP (just to name a few) to help create unique (RED) products, in which 50% of the profits are sent to the Global Fund to invest in HIV and AIDS programs in Africa. (RED) believes that by 2015, the number of babies born with HIV could be zero.

Malcolm Gladwell, researcher and a staff writer for The New Yorker, explores the power behind word-of-mouth phenomenon in his bestseller, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference. Ever wonder why certain things catch on (such as Silly Bandz) and how they spread? Amazon says, "The best way to understand the dramatic transformation of unknown books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the phenomena of word of mouth or any number of the other mysterious changes that mark everyday life," writes Malcolm Gladwell, "is to think of them as epidemics. Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread just like viruses do." Although anyone familiar with the theory of memetics will recognize this concept, Gladwell's The Tipping Point has quite a few interesting twists on the subject."

Thanksgiving is only a day away, but we all know that it's not just your aunt's awesome stuffing that you're looking forward to. Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving, is the BIGGEST shopping day of the year. Deals, doorbusters, and slashed prices draw crowds in the thousands during early morning hours. But how can we score those top deals without getting mobbed by the crowd or fighting over the last $3 toaster (à la Rebecca Bloomwood of Confessions of a Shopaholic)? BFF has your Black Friday guide to surviving on top!

1. Do your research beforehand

Sift through ads and visit deal-oriented websites, like GottaDeal. Know what the deals are and which retailers carry the ones you want to score. Picking out which deals you want ahead of time keeps you from making a bad split-second impulse buy.

2. Be a savvy shopper

Check Consumer Reports and reviews online before you commit to buying anything. No matter how discounted it is, a bad product is still a bad product.

3. Pick a good shopping buddy

Waiting in long lines and running into angry bargain-hunters can be a pain. But if you have a good teammate who can get in the spirit of Black Friday, shopping on such a stressful day will be less frustrating.

4. Bring props

Make a list of all your deals and stores to hit so that you don't get confused in all the commotion. Bring the ads you found so that if there is any dispute, you have your source with you! Finally, pack portable snacks and drinks so that you're not feeling faint during the shopping extravaganza!

4. Logistics, logistics, logistics

Now that you have your deals, stores, and Black Friday partner(s)-in-crime ready, it's all about execution. Overboard? I think not. Deciding on a time will help keep you moving. Planning out your route helps you navigate efficiently and saves time so that you can get in and out without pushing through crowds for too long.

5. Dress comfortably

I cannot stress this one enough. Make sure you bring a warm jacket - waiting outside in long seemingly never-ending lines can be harsh so be sure to stay warm. Keep in mind that shopping on Black Friday is a physical effort. That means no heels! Wear comfortable clothes that you can move around in.

6. Make friends with the people in line

This could prove handy if you have to run bathroom, and there are new friends who can save your spot in line.

7. Keep in mind that you can also shop online

Many retailers are having the same, if not better, deals online so don't feel like you have to brave the early morning crowds.

Astro has wowed audiences along the East Coast at events, such as DE’s Stop The Violence Rally and BK Fashion Weekend. Today is America Recycles Day!

When you say recycle, many of us tend to imagine those bright blue bins where we separate aluminum cans from plastic bottles. But for America Recycles Day, I found out that recycling is not only putting containers in their appropriate bins. It's also about donating things that you don't use anymore to people who need it, getting your local community behind a cause together, and knowing that your actions do matter. Overconsumption of natural resources and heavy production of non-recyclable waste are taking their toll on the environment. That's why America Recycles Day is so important.

So spread the word about this national initiative to educate and motivate people about recycling! Here are some cool things recycling-related things that I found:

TerraCycle makes cool things out of waste. This Starburst cooler was made from
candy wrappers! (Also, join one of TerraCycle's brigades and get paid for trash)

The U.S. is one of the world's top consumers of natural resources (measured as an ecological footprint) and accounts for 24% of the world's consumption of resources while only making op 5% of the population!

Soles 4 Souls, a partner of America Recycles Day, has donated almost 12 million pairs
of shoes to those in need around the world!

Recycling paper instead of making it from new material generates 74 percent less air pollution and uses 50 percent less water.

Winter Beauty Tricks: Keep Cold Weather From Taking It Out on Your Skin

Hey BFF'ers,
For me, winter signals holiday decorations and get-togethers, hot chocolate with marshmallows, and cozy wool capes in camel. But one thing that I can't stand about winter is the cold weather itself! Your hair gets blown out by high-speed winds (not in a gorgeous Marni Spring RTW 2011 fashion show kind of way), and the chilly temperatures can dry out your skin. Not cute. I thought I'd share with you guys some of the great beauty tips that I found on how to survive the winter blues.

First things first, remember to apply sunblock everyday. Even though it's cold, the sun's rays still do its damages on the skin, known to cause wrinkling and skin cancer.

Next up: keeping your skin moisturized. Avoid products containing alcohol; they are drying for the skin. Instead, be sure to use a mild facial cleanser (I love the one by Aveeno because it's a gentle non-drying formula!) and switch to a richer moisturizer. Use a hydrating mask about once a week to keep your skin soft and smooth.

Now what do you do about chapped lips? I don't know about you guys but it seems like no matter what I do, chapped lips are inevitable! Always remember to put on lip balm (I can't live without Smith's Rosebud Salve!), and more ultra chapped lips, try a heavier emollient, like the one by Aquaphor.

Those were my musts for winter. Now here are a few secret hints for more winter beauty woes:
**For rough elbows and heels, try a thick moisturizer on the elbows and an exfoliating scrub on the heels. Then apply a thin layer of Vaseline to both for an overnight moisture overhaul.

**Red nose like Rudolph? The cold causes blood vessels to expand, therefore causing red noses in many. Try using sunscreen or some other face protectant to create a barrier between your skin and cold winds. When you get indoors, apply a warm compress and the redness should subside.

**For red, dry eyes, protect them from wind, glare, and dry air by donning a pair of sunglasses (yes, in the winter!). Use eyedrops for bloodshot eyes.

**Protect your tresses by using a leave-in conditioner before applying any hot tools, like a blow dryer or curling iron

Now that you're winter-proofed, enjoy the season! ;)

National Kindness Week: November 8-14

I didn't even know something like this existed until recently. And it got me thinking, why is there a week of kindness? Does kindness not show up during other weeks of the year? Where does it go? M.I.A.? Then, I realized that having an official week of it gets people thinking about it. To make it official is to have it permeate our thoughts, enter our daily lives. Let's face it, sometimes we get to caught up in our own life bubbles that we overlook what's happening around us. Little things have a big impact. Imagine all those times when a stranger helped you out with heavy groceries, or gave you a dime when you were short on change at a store. They meant a lot even though it was such a small gesture. Let's step back, and when the right moment arrives, pass along a bit of kindness...

Bring desserts in to class or the office

As your #1 BFF, you know you can always come to us for your Beauty needs. This past weekend, one of our biffles brought up a very good question: How can I save my Flat strands? After much research, we decided to take some tips from Teen Vogue. Check them out and tell us what you think!

"Breakage is a common concern for women with fine hair," says Rojas, who has given a boost to everyone from Natasha Bedingfield to Kate Moss. And it should be—weak hair not only looks lifeless, but constant breakage naturally results in hair loss. For proper strength straining, Rojas recommends bulking up with regular deep conditioning treatments and says to lay off the straightening irons and tight buns and ponytails. "These can easily compromise the integrity of hair," he adds. A flattering cut, on the other hand, is an easy way to get a lift: "Long or short, an angled cut is a must," he says. And while you're already in the salon, a dose of color might do you some good. According to Rojas, while one-dimensional color will only call attention to the fact that your hair is indeed flat on your head—"Natural-looking highlights and lowlights help give the illusion of depth."

Music Monday! : Neon Trees

Neon Trees is a rock band from Provo, Utah whose first single, "Animal", has climbed to #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Alternative Rock Chart. The band's name originates from the lighted trees outside of a restaurant, seen in California. Although they had several prior independent releases, the band released its debut album at Mercury/Def Jam, Habits, on March 16, 2010. "Animal" was chosen as the lead single and was shortly thereafter featured as the Free Single of the Week on iTunes in March 2010. They performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live on March 23, 2010 and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on May 14, 2010 and Lopez Tonight on October 18, 2010. Disaster Relief in Indonesia!

Earlier this week, the Mentawai islands of Indonesia were hit with a tsunami followed by an 7.5 magnitude earthquake. In these remote regions, the death tolled has surpassed 300. Warning systems set up 2008 had fallen into disrepair and had stopped working a month before. Homes, possessions, and entire villages were destroyed.

Watching scary movies has always been one of my favorite things to do. It's one of those strange paradoxes where you're definitely creeped out during the movie, but you can't stop watching! After several encounters with Michael Myers and some not-so-friendly ghosts, à la The Sixth Sense, my solution was to only watch scary movies with my best friends. Somehow fighting over popcorn and making them watch the scary scenes while I hid behind a pillow made scary movies all the more fun and less like something was going to jump out at me! With Halloween right around the corner, this is one tradition that never gets old! Here are ten of my favorite horror movies, from classic thrillers to box office slasher hits. Help Teach a Younger Child to Read - Best way to start is by choosing the younger child's favorite story book he or she likes. This way the experience is enjoyable for him/her and they will be more focused.

Make "I-Care" kits for Homeless Shelters - these kits can be filled with combs, toothbrushes, shampoo, etc. for the homeless. You can even add a little card with a personal message to help brighten their day!

Other ideas include: Help build a home with Habitat for Humanity, Read books or newspapers for visually impaired people, Organize a Canned Goods drive, Adopt an Acre of a Rainforest, Visit Senior Citizens at a Nursing Home.
