Mel & Nicole: A story about BFFs, acting, & Subway.

A lot of people come to NY to pursue their dreams. Mel & Nicole from BFF Episode 13, know that all too well as they both aspire to be actresses. Read as Mel talks about how her & Nicole met, and what it's like to be a "starving actor" in NYC:

Moving to New York to pursue our dreams didn't seem so hard, naturally at first it wasn't. Alike everyone else, Nicole got to our school orientation and the first class all on time, meanwhile I'm still in England due to Visa problems. I missed the first two weeks. That's when I met Nicole, when I slumped over from the school fire exit door to introduce myself and having her unable to coherently hear what I was saying. Somehow we became friends...

So the first semester strolled by with no damages to our health, or food supply, but then somehow in the second semester we all seemed to noticed how we were having to use that one phrase that we all loathe for too many reasons:

"Nah I can't, I'm broke..."

That's when the lunches, movie nights, buying clothes -- stopped. Then the piles and piles of pasta and ramen noodles came out to play, every night. Our one place of love during this whole time, I won't lie, was Subway (eat fresh!). We would go there during every break at school, mainly because:

A: It was cheap
B: It was tasty
C: It was warm during the winter and cold during the summer.

We've graduated and started putting ourselves searching through craigslist.org to finally get a job. Whenever we get to meet up and need to eat, I can assure you that Subway is our place of choice.

Also, the whole "starving actor" name, isn't all it's cracked up to be, it doesn't help you decrease in size and look great on camera. Once you stop eating regularly, your body lacks everything that it's been starved from, therefore, the next thing you eat, your body will then digest twice as much. Basically most of the time starving yourself and then eating increases body size. So we decided if it was from starving yourself to eating ramen or pasta every time... We chose the latter.

So I guess, Nicole and I didn't really go through the whole "Starving actor" problem, but it sure as hell stopped us from going to things we loved doing. But I guess it's a good thing that we can say, "hey, at least we're not starving to death while our parents are none the wiser in another country..."

Music Mondays - BFFS Love Tally Hall.

Episode 12 contestant, Jazz, decided to share with us how music has allowed her and her BFF, Jewel, to bond with one another even though they each have chosen separate colleges to attend to:

My BFF Jewel and I are super obsessed with a band called Tally Hall. I discovered Tally Hall while surfing the web in our freshman year of highschool. At the time, the band was not very well known. I decided that I HAD to show Jewel their music. Jewel instantly fell in love with the band, just like I did. So, since our freshman year, we have been able to bond over this somewhat underground band. We have gone to several of their concerts and actually met the band in person! So, although Jewel and I are currently in different colleges and have had to split up, we will always be able to reunite and bond over this band and music that we both love so much!

We love when music brings BFFs together! Here is a song by Tally Hall that Jewel & Jazz wanted to share with you guys. The song is called "Greener". You can view it here. Enjoy!

Fashion Fridays!

Fashion is what showcases true personality . Personality is one element that brings BFFs together and no one knows this better than BFF Season 1 contestants, Quenna and Rahkua. These ladies have graced our presence to share with us their personal style and thoughts on their BFF's individual style.

Quenna: Last semester a girl in one of my classes said to me, “You’re always so creative and daring with your outfits. How do you come up with them?” “Well,” I responded, “I get dressed and I ask my roommate her opinion of my outfit. If she dislikes it, then I’m good to go, but if she likes it, then I know I need to go and mismatch things a little more, find more unnecessary colors or accessories to add”. And that’s really what my style is about: combining things in an unusual way. I LOVE color! And I love to do the unexpected, like wearing disparate earrings and hairstyles that my parents think are slightly bizarre. Honestly, I just like to have fun with my clothes, and that’s how I compose my apparel.

My BFF Rahkua enjoys clothes and accessories just as much as I do, if not more, but she’s much more straight laced. By straight laced I mean that EVERY single detail must MATCH. The brown in her belt must be the exact color of the brown in her 4-inch heels, her earrings and necklace must be the same color. That’s overly restrictive to me. I do enjoy how comfortable she is with “dressing up”—heels and vibrant eye makeup—daily. It’s normal for her, and I’m slowing taking pointers. Frequently, however, I feel she under dresses, and I try to encourage her to cover up more, but of course she never listens. Over time, we have come to realize our differences of style and have just agreed to disagree.

Rahkua: I often get compliments and exclamations of disbelief on my style and the fact that I often "dress-up" in heels, elaborate eye make-up, short skirts/dresses, or a dark-denim skinny leg jean, and low cut tops, the works. Lol...I'd like to think though that I just wake up and put on clothes. I do admit that when it comes to putting the complete thing together, like the final picture, I am a bit anal, but it's a natural thing...like it sorta just happens...but in a very specific way. I love colors and I like to put lots of them together but only in a way that perfectly coordinate with each other. :) And sometimes just a simple gold/black/brown or silver/black classy look is just fine. I don't ALWAYs have to "dress-up" tho...I love to mix it up sometimes with a funky pair of tennis-shoes and a punk/rock/hiphop look with my own little spin (complete with the zipper earrings, netted bracelets, skinny leg jeans, high tops, and chains!). I'm uniquely me: I can't even replicate my own outfits sometimes! I love to love what I look like, no matter what anyone else is looking at!

My BFF Quenna is quite an interesting character when it comes to style. I usually would never wear what she decides to but in that same vein, I love how she can definitely make it work for her. From big hair to mismatch earring and bright colored pants and boots, she is truly testing the fringes of style. She also has great height/figure to make most looks turn out great. Though we definitely do not always agree on her compositional choices, there's always some element of her look that I just HAVE to have (and many time do get, incorporating them in my own way). And all of our friends agree that no matter what we decide to put together, we always go out looking our best! :)

Fashion Fridays!

Episode 9 contestants, Laura & Nicole have taken over today's post for Fashion Friday. Below they describe their own personal style and what they think about the other's. Enjoy:

Nicole on Laura: Laura's style? Laura is always telling me that Coco Chanel said, “Before you leave the house, take off one thing.” I think she says that because my outfits stress her out! I like to wear a lot of patterns, and sometimes mix them together… and the rebel that I am, I don’t like to follow the usual fashion rules – no black and brown together etc.

Laura has a very chic, classic style. We are really opposite sometimes – she likes to pair things with black, I like to pair things with white. I like a more eclectic look and she likes a sleeker look. Somehow we still manage to borrow each other’s clothes, all the time. My favorite pair of jeans was stolen from her closet – please don’t tell her (sidenote: well we think it's too late for that NICOLE!), because she has been looking for them for months and hasn’t yet found them. I only wear them when she is out of town, which is hard for me, because they make my butt look great.

Despite our style differences, Laura lets me be her audition stylist. She is always consulting me and my closet for her many random auditions. I like to think of getting dressed as a fun game. Some people take it too seriously, but for me and Laura it is just an organic extension of our personalities and emotions. If I feel flighty I wear some feathers, if I feel cool I wear my chucks, if I feel sick I wear something fancy to make me feel a little better. I like to get dressed up and I like to be dressed down - to end this post – I say - please get dressed every day.

Laura on Nicole: Nicole's Style? YIKES!!!! Since you’re asking, do you know if, “What Not to Wear” on TLC is taking casting calls? Kidding, kidding. I hope Nicole doesn’t read this or I’m banned from her closet for life. I only joke because I steal items from her wardrobe on the daily (except the undies…gross). I admire her style because it can be original and funky, while maintaining a classy look. She’s the type who can walk into sample sale or thrift store, and come out with something glamorous. I don’t have the patience for all that jazz, so I become envious and steal her clothes in return. Shhhh, don’t tell (sidenote: didn't you two realize you'd BOTH be reading this?).

We aren’t always on the same page when it comes to fashion. I’m usually more conscious of matching color with my accessories. Nicole usually likes to be bold and try something different (or whack). Because she has such a natural beauty, she looks great on earthy tones. She can really pull off the vintage style.

Since my three sisters aren’t around in NYC for consultation, Nicole has filled in that role. I value her advice because she watched Gossip Girl, and that’s the only reason.

This post brings tears to our eyes, ... well not really but it really is touching to see how these two gals consider one another's style.

Don't forget, there is a brand new episode of BFF on live @ : http://MySpace.com/BFF
