Dear Nicole

TeenDiariesOnline.com is a site dedicated to everything for the teenage girl. From music, fashion, and advice, it’s no wonder that we found this site to be a girl’s true sanctuary. Within the site there is an anonymous advice column called Dear Nicole. It’s a place where you can reach out for a bit of advice or a little direction. We all know life has its little (or maybe huge) complications. That is why we here at BFF decided to team up with TD to present you with, “Dear Nicole”:

Dear Nicole,

I really like this guy and I've liked him for three years. We're pretty good friends, and we used to six next to each other in five classes. He would make jokes about me blushing all the time and just kid around. It's like he would be a gentleman to every girl BUT me. He'd hold the door open for five girls, and then when I was about to walk through ... he'd go right in front of me. We'd talk a lot sometimes and he would lean really close to me when we were talking. But the thing is, we switched seats in three of the five classes and now we hardly talk. It seems like we're both trying too hard, and now he talks a lot to the girls he sits around. Do you think I was just being talked to because I was there? Or do you think he might really like me? Please help me!

A: It sounds like he was flirting in the weird way that some guys flirt, but it’s hard to tell you what’s going on exactly at this point. He may be showing off by talking to the other girls around him or he may be ‘moving on’. Chill out and just watch his behavior. See if you can strike up a conversation with him in the other 2 classes you have and see how he responds. If he is cool in those classes and not-so-cool in the other classes, then let him know how that makes you feel. See what he says and go from there. Hope this helps.

Nicole

What To Do on Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is getting closer and everywhere you look you are surrounded by hearts, cupid, the colors red and pink, and an entire assortment of mushy stuff. If you are currently not in a relationship - this might seem as a nightmare. But it doesn't have to be. We here at BFF stumbled upon a list on what you (and your BFFs) can do on Valentine's Day without having to be in a relationship. Enjoy!

1)Pamper Yourself: have a fun trip at the day spa, be indulgent, or splurge at the mall.

2)Celebrate with friends! For girls: plan a girl's night out on the town, or for guys: plan a poker night, or organize a sports game.

3)Be Proactive! Donate your time to a worthy cause. Just because you're not spending Valentines Day with a valentine, does not mean you can't spend it with those less fortunate than you.

4)Prioritize! Make a list of things that need to be prioritized in your life. Once you have made a list of things you would like to make more time for, write out a plan to help you reach those goals.

5)Reorganize! Make Valentines Day your new spring-cleaning day! Tackle your closet with a new plan, put all the clothes you don't wear anymore into a donation pile, and rearrange the clothes you do wear.

6)Take a short trip. Pack a bag and hit the road. Planning a short trip will take your mind off the whole Valentines Day tradition and it will be a fun getaway.

7)Think positively. Not having someone to share Valentines Day with isn't the end of the world. Just think, not having a valentine is much easier than actually having to plan out what to get a significant other.

8)Spend time with your family. Make it a night to remember by watching all classic romance movies together.

9)Get physical. Go for a run. Go to the gym. Play a round of golf. Go for a hike. Do something active-anything active-to keep you busy and get your endorphins pumping.

10)Be creative. Be artistic. Channel your emotions into creating a painting, a poem, or a song.

Music Monday

You can't put her in a box nor can she simply be defined. Melanie Fiona is in a setting all her own. "Born to Guyanese immigrant parents and growing up in a music-filled house in the inner city of Toronto, Fiona knew from the very beginning that music is what moves her. 'My mother, who shares my love for music, played everything from The Ronettes to Whitney Houston around the house as I grew up. My father would let me sit on the stage while he rehearsed with his band as a guitarist.'"Some of her musical influences include Bob Marley, Sade, and Patsy Cline.

Dear Nicole,

I'm a teenager and I REALLY want to make my dreams come true. I want to be an actress. I find that very hard in Michigan. Everyone is telling me that I need an agent, but I have no idea how to find one. My family doesn't support my dreams, and basically laughs in my face when I ask them to help me out some. I'm just a kid. I know my dreams are far fetched, but I'm not going to give up easily. I really want this to happen. If you have any advice at all, that would be a lot.

A: First and foremost, don’t let anyone put a damper on your dreams. And I mean NO ONE…including your family. With that in mind, unless you have acting experience under your belt, I would start with that. Try getting into a local acting troop or join the drama club in your school. Get into a few productions and then go for the agent. It will be important to have experience under your belt so that your agent can try to sell you. Speak to your drama teacher at school about your plans and see if they can point you in the right direction or empower you to make the next step. Hope this helps and DON’T GIVE UP!!
